Introduction
“Neckties vs. High Heels” is a black humor comedy adapted by San Francisco playwright Joyce Hsu from her earlier work Who's the Winner?, first performed in 2008 in Silicon Valley. The play humorously explores the lives of Bay Area Chinese families, focusing on themes of marriage, gender, and humanity.
Sixteen years later, it returns with a professional team from top Chinese institutions, inviting the audience to reflect on life through laughter and tears.
Playwright Introduction
Joyce Hsu
Joyce Hsu is a renowned playwright based in Silicon Valley, San Francisco. After graduating from National Taiwan University with a degree in Chemistry, she pursued graduate studies at Caltech and spent ten years conducting biochemical research at UC Berkeley and Stanford University.
Her passion for art and theater led her to create over ten plays. She has also served on the boards of the San Jose Repertory Theatre and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
In 1996, she realized her dream of stage playwriting and production, collaborating with performing arts groups "Bridge & Gate" and "Huayi Performing Group." Nine of her plays premiered in the Bay Area, and four were selected by professional theater groups in Shanghai. Her historical play Hsi-Shih & Fu-Chai was adapted into a musical and featured in the 2001 Shanghai International Arts Festival.
In April this year, A Date of A Lifetime was adapted into a musical by Stan Lai's performance team and premiered in Shanghai.
